Tech Breakdown of the iPhone 17 Pro Design

The camera module design of the professional iPhones has remained unchanged for six years, but the iPhone 17 Pro will introduce a redesign due to a new 48MP telephoto lens with 10x lossless zoom.

Increasing the megapixel count reduces pixel size and the amount of light each pixel can capture. Since telephoto lenses are particularly sensitive to light, Apple will increase the sensor size to compensate. The only way to fit the larger telephoto lens without major structural changes is to position it horizontally.

As a result, there is no longer space for the LiDAR module in its current location. It will be moved to the right side, aligned with the motherboard connectors, which Apple will relocate into the space freed up by repositioning the telephoto lens.
