What of the cripple who hates dancers?

What of the ox who loves his yoke and deems

the elk and deer of the forest stray and vagrant things?

What of the old serpent who cannot shed his skin,

and calls all others naked and shameless?

And of him who comes early to the wedding-feast,

and when over-fed and tired goes his way

saying that all feasts are violation and all feasters law-breakers?

자신이 걷지 못한다고 춤추는 자를 미워하는 사람들은 무엇이며

자신에게 둘러 씌어진 멍에는 사랑하면서 숲 속에서 길을 잃었거나 떠도는

큰사슴과 사슴에 대해 생각하는 황소를 닮은 사람들은 무엇인가?

그리고 자신의 허물은 벗어 던지지 못하면서 발가벗고 부끄러움없는

다른 모든 것에 대해서 말하는 늙은 뱀같은 사람들은 무엇인가?

또한 혼인잔치에 남보다 먼저 와서 배가 터지도록 먹고 지쳐서

자신이 갈 길로 돌아가면서 모든 잔치는 법률위반이며 잔치에 모인 사람들은

범법자라고 말하는 그들은 누구인가?

What shall I say of these save that they too stand in the sunlight,

but with their backs to the sun?

They see only their shadows, and their shadows are their laws.

내가 이런 사람들에 대해 무엇을 말할 수 있으랴?

다만 그들도 햇빛아래 서 있지만 태양을 등지고 있는 사람들이라는 것 뿐..

그리고 이 사람들은 오직 자신의 그림자만 보고

그 그림자를 그들 자신의 법으로 삼고 있는 사람들 인 것을...

And what is the sun to them but a caster of shadows?

And what is it to acknowledge the laws but to stoop down

and trace their shadows upon the earth?

그렇다면 그들에게 태양이란 그림자를 던져 주는 것 외에 무엇이며

그리고 법을 인정한다는 것은 허리를 구부리고 대지에 드리워진

자신의 그림자를 따라 가는 것 외에 무엇이겠는가?

But you who walk facing the sun,

what images drawn on the earth can hold you?

You who travel with the wind, what weather-vane shall direct your course?

그러나 그대 태양을 향하여 걸어가는 이여,

대지에 드리워진 어떤 이미지가 그대를 붙잡을 수 있겠는가?

그대 바람과 함께 여행하는 이여,

어떤 풍향계가 그대의 길을 지시할 수 있겠는가?

What man's law shall bind you if you break your yoke

but upon no man's prison door?

What laws shall you fear if you dance but stumble against no man's iron chains?

And who is he that shall bring you to judgment if you tear off your garment

yet leave it in no man's path?

그리고 인간이 만든 감옥의 문이 아니라

그대 자신의 멍에를 부수는 것이라면 그 어떤 인간의 법이 그대를 묶을 수 있겠는가?

인간이 만든 쇠사슬에 걸려 비틀거리지 않고 그대가 춤출 수 있다면

그 어떤 법이 그대를 두렵게 하겠는가?

그리고 만일 그대가 그대의 옷을 찢더라도 그대가 아직 인간의 길에서

벗어나지 않았다면 그 누가 그대를 재판정에 세울 수 있겠는가?
