"Fun fact! Pilots do this because the positive G forces they experience maneuvering this way are easier (relatively) than the negative G forces experienced if they just nose down. Just pushing the nose down, their shoulders dig into the harness. Not an issue if they are gently going in for a landing, but experiencing 3+ Gs on shoulders trying to dive like this is not comfortable at all. Going upside down before quickly reducing elevation pushes them into their seats instead."
