9월 28일까지 베를린 평화의 소녀상을 철거해라?

어쩌다 보니 또 항의의 글을 남긴 이야기를 쓰게 되었습니다.

앙님들께서 잘 아시다시피 세계 여러 곳에 위안부 피해자를 기리기 위한 평화의 소녀상이 세워졌습니다. 그런데 지난 2020년 9월 독일 베를린 시에 설치된 평화의 소녀상에 대해, 일본 측이 문제를 제기했습니다. 구청이 철거를 명령했으나, 재독 시민단체인 코리아협의회가 법원에 가처분을 신청해서 다행히 보류되었고, 이후 1년씩 두 차례 특별 허가를 받아 소녀상을 지켰다고 합니다. 그런데 구청은 2022년 9월 이후부터는 재량으로 용인해왔다며, 이제부터는 소녀상을 설치한 코리아협의회에 과태료를 부과할테니, 돌아오는 9월 28일까지 자진 철거를 요구했다고 합니다.

상황이 이러할진데 정부는 민간 차원에서 이뤄지는 활동에 관여하지 않겠다는 원칙을 고수하고 있고, 그 사이에 일본은 베를린시장을 초청하고 자문위원에게 호텔식사를 대접했다는 이야기도 나왔습니다.

일본군 위안부 피해자이면서 인권평화운동가인 김복동 할머니의 삶과 뜻을 이어 받아 활동하는 단체인 "김복동의 희망"에서, 직접 독일 외무청과 베를린 시장에게 항의 이메일, 호소 이메일 등을 보내자는 운동을 하고 있습니다. 그래서 저도 이에 동참하고자 독일 외무청과 베를린 시장에게 메일을 보냈습니다.

내 이름은 OOO이며, 한국인입니다. 얼마 전에 나는 베를린에 설치된 평화의 소녀상의 철거 소식을 들었습니다.

평화의 소녀상(statue of peace)은 일본군 위안부 피해자들을 기리기 위한 예술작품입니다. 아시다시피 일본군 위안부는 일본 제국 정부의 관여 및 묵인 하에 자행된 식민지 및 점령지의 여성을 대상으로 자행되었던 성범죄 행위를 말합니다. 한국, 중국, 인도네시아, 말레이시아, 베트남 등의 아시아 국가를 비롯하여, 네덜란드, 프랑스, 미국, 러시아 등 여러 나라의 수많은 여성들이 일본군에 의해 강제로 위안부가 되었습니다.

나치 독일과 일본제국은 공통적으로 전쟁을 일으킨 국가이지만, 오늘날 한국인들을 비롯한 전세계 사람들은 독일과 일본을 다른 시각으로 인식합니다. 왜냐하면 독일은 홀로코스트 관련 법안을 제정하고 시민들에게 과거의 잘못과 다시는 이런 일이 일어나지 않도록 교육하고 있기 때문입니다. 이러한 독일의 행동은 과거를 진정으로 반성하기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 작센하우센 수용소는 끔찍한 만행이 일어났던 곳이지만, 독일은 이곳을 그대로 보존하였습니다. 그 이유는 반성을 위한 것이라는 사실을 잘 알고 있습니다. 그러나 일본은 어떠합니까? 일본은 여전히 자신들의 수치스러운 역사를 왜곡하고 숨깁니다.

평화의 소녀상은, 스스로의 역사를 숨기는 일본에 대한 거울입니다. 자신이 얼굴이 부끄러운 자는 거울을 볼 용기가 없습니다. 오히려 거울을 치우려고 하지요. 일본은 과거의 만행에 대해 반성하지 않기 때문에, 사람들은 일본군 위안부 피해자들을 기리고, 일본의 잔학무도한 범행에 대한 반성을 촉구하기 위하여 세계 곳곳에 평화의 소녀상이 세우는 것입니다. 그러나 몰래 평화의 소녀상을 없애기 위해서 일본은 여러 가지 비열한 방법을 쓰고 있습니다.

독일을 대표하는 베를린시는 그러한 일본의 비열한 행위에 동조할 것입니까?
지금까지 독일의 반성을 믿었던 전세계의 사람들에게, 그러한 반성이 거짓이었다고 말할 생각입니까?

베를린에 있는 평화의 소녀상 철거 시도를 즉각 중단하길 강력히 촉구합니다.
작센하우센 수용소처럼 평화의 소녀상도 영구적으로 존치해야 합니다.

The statue of peace is a work of art that honors the victims of Japanese military sex slavery. As you may know, the Japanese military sex slavery is an act of sexual violence perpetrated against women in colonized and occupied territories with the involvement and acquiescence of the Japanese imperial government. Countless women in Asian countries such as South Korea, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, as well as in countries such as the Netherlands, France, the United States, and Russia, were forced to become sex slaves by the Japanese military.

Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan are both countries that fought a common war, but today, people around the world, including Koreans, perceive Germany and Japan differently. Because Germany has enacted Holocaust legislation and educates its citizens about the wrongs of the past and how they should never happen again. We believe that the reason for Germany's behavior is that they truly reflect on the past. The Sachsenhausen concentration camp is a place where horrible atrocities took place, but Germany has preserved it as it is, and we understand that the reason is for reflection. But what about Japan? Japan still distorts and hides their shameful history.

The statue of Peace is a mirror of Japan hiding its own history. People who are ashamed of their faces don't have the courage to look in the mirror; they'd rather put it away. Because Japan refuses to reflect on its past atrocities, people erect the Girl of Peace statues around the world to honor the victims of Japanese comfort women and to call for reflection on Japan's atrocities. However, in order to secretly remove the statues, Japan uses many despicable methods.

Will the city of Berlin, representing Germany, sympathize with Japan's despicable behavior?
Are you going to tell the people of the world, who have believed in Germany's reflection until now, that it was a lie?

We strongly urge you to immediately stop the attempted removal of the Girl of Peace statue in Berlin. Like the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, the statue of Peace should be made permanent.
