오늘 딸래미랑 얘기하다가 학교 수업 시간에 이(Lee, 李)씨 성이 전부 베트남에서 왔다고 배웠다고 들었습니다.
깜짝 놀라서 아니라고 해줘도 학교에서 들은걸 맞다고 생각하는 아이를 보고 안되겠다 싶어 담당 선생님에게 아래와 같이 메일을 보냈어요.
조금 오지랖인가도 싶었지만 잘못된 정보를 들은 다른 아이들도 그대로 믿게될까봐 그대로 반복 전달되는 일이라도 막고자 그냥 메일을 보냈습니다.

Hello. I am Joonmo Lee, father of ??.
I write this email in a hope to discuss about the origin of LEE surnames.
While I was talking to ??, I was quite surprised and saddened from what I heard from my daughter.
She said that there was a mention in a HASS class that all LEE surnames (or all LEE surnames in Korea) are originated from Vietnam.
It was shocking to me that ?? has a firm confidence on what she was told in a classroom even though when her dad was trying to correct the incorrect information about her own root.
I wish that this was her misunderstanding of what was to be addressed in her HASS class.
However, just in case that her understanding is based on what was actually intended to be taught or transferred, I would like to discuss this topic with you.
You may know that surnames in Korea are not just a character but also related to their origin places, hence making many different clans using a same surname character.
For LEE(이) surnames based on a Chinese character of 李, there are also many clans, big and small, with many different origins.
(Such as Jeonju Lee (全州 李), Gyeongju Lee (慶州 李) and so on)
But most of LEE clans in Korea are originated locally in Korea, just adopting Chinese surname systems, from as early as before three kingdom era in Korea (not Chinese three kingdom era) up to Goryeo dynasty when most of surname systems had been established.
Of course there are several foreign-origin LEE clans in Korea as well, but most of them are from Chinese origins (and I don’t think they are from Vietnam as Vietnamese started to use Ly(李) under Chinese Han rule).
There is only one LEE clan in Korea which is originated from Vietnam, Hwasan Lee(花山 李) clan, which is descended from a last surviving prince of Vietnamese Ly dynasty.
And Hwasan Lee clan is not among big LEE clans and cannot represent all Korean LEE clans.
I hope this discussion can be found helpful for the classroom talks in the future.

동남아 화교 출신은 다른 철자 방식을 쓰거든요.

중국 방언에 따라 발음이 달라지니 재밌는 현상이 생기더군요. 동남아 화교들은 민남어 계통을 쓰는 경우가 많긴 한데 그중에서도 갈립니다 (대만, 하이난 다 조금씩 방언이 있어서요), 상해는 광동어, 중국 표준어는 북경어인데, 인도네시아는 중국어 성을 다 없애버려서 그쪽 별개의 성을 사용합니다. 그래서 영어 철자를 보면, 대충 어떤 방언을 쓰는지 그룹이 나오긴 합니다. 예를 들어 Chen(북경어)을 보면 (wiki에서), Chan(광동어), Tan(호키엔), Chin (하카), 진(한국), Chen/Tan (인도네시아). Lip Bu Tan이 북경어로는 Chen. Lee씨는 철자가 많이 안 바뀌어서, 객가인 리관유도 Lee를 사용하더군요. 근데 인도네시아에서는 "Lie"라고 하는 것 같습니다.
차라리 중국 가면 북경어만 잘 하면 되는데, 동남아시아는 민남어 쓰는 그룹, 하카 쓰는 그룹, 광동어 쓰는 그룹이렇게 나뉘니까, 중국어도 여러개를 동시에 말해서, 언어적으로 훈련이 되는것 같아요. 중국어로 사업 하는 사람들은 기본적으로 많은 언어를 하는것 같습니다.
한국에 빅토리아라고 말레이지아 화교출신 뮤지컬 배우가 있는데, 부모가 다른 방언을 쓴다는군요. 그래서 집에서는 주로 영어로 의사 소통한다고. :) 예전같았으면 방언을 강요했을지도 모르는데, 요즘은 다들 영어를 쓰니까요.

지금 직장에서도 그렇고 여러 공간에서 다양한 계통의 백그라운드를 가진 중국계 사람들과 많이 접하고도 있고요.
그래서 만다린(보통화, 대만 국어), 호키엔(푸젠화, 민난화, 대만어), 광동어(홍콩, 본토 광동성), 하카어(객가어) 화자들은 만나봤고 주요 해외 방언 중에서는 치우차우(조주화, 차오저우) 화자만 직접 보지는 못 했네요.
말씀대로 만다린 계통과 기타 동남아 해외 화교 방언들의 성씨가 발음이 달라서 철자도 다르지요.
암튼 본토 출신(으로 추정은 되지만 대만이나 싱가포르 출신일 수도)이라 그런지 이해도가 부족한 부분을 잘 모르면서 잘못 가르쳐서 듣고 유쾌하지는 않았네요.
